Introduction
Artist Nam Sang-weon views abects not merely with his eyes, but with his heart.
He perceives them through the lens of personal memories, life experiences, and the entirely of his existence. The Diue in his works is enigmatic. It lacks the depth to be simply called blue, and its mystery remans unexpressed. It conveys a sense of vitality yet also evokes a poignant melancholy, intensilving its mysterious allure.
For over 17 years, he has crafted his own "blue' imbued with his philosophy and worldview, repeatedly mixing paints, layering them on canvas, and perfecting his signature color. The intertwining of reality and fantasy in his paintings, such as overlapping leaves symbolizing our reality yet representing a utopian dream, is striking. The visible veins on the leaves, like the back of a hand streed from labor, subtly depict life's realities. Moreover, tiny figures like Spider Man, The Little Prince, Atomic Boy, and Voyager 2 are whimsically painted on these leaves, blending realms of reality and unrcality within his artworks.
Some mistake Nams works as products of digital art printing or media aided by mechanical tools like LEDs, but all his pieces are meticulously painted in oil, irrespoctive of size, taking over four months each to complete. He employs various brushes from sharp pointed to wide brushes, layering strokes to create depth akin to Leonardo da Vincis "sfumate" technique, delicately blurring boundaries between overlaid leaves, leaf edges, and backgrounds.
His unique approach, akin at times to Asian ink wash painting but with paints seeping rather than being applied te canvas, emits an ethereal, fantastical aura, offering viewers a distinctive visual experience.
