Introduction
Balloons can only rise when they maintain internal tension equivalent to external pressure.
The reason why balloons can maintain their beautiful shape is because they can withstand external pressure with the same amount of force. If the balance of power is even slightly disrupted, the shape of the balloon cannot be maintained. Balloons constantly adjust the balance of power to maintain their small and fragile shape. If external pressure increases, the balloon shrinks, and if internal pressure increases, the balloon bursts. Neither of these conditions allows the balloon to maintain its shape or fulfill its essence, which is to rise.
This represents an internal tension that cannot be relaxed for even a moment and an obsessive anxiety about when its existence might disappear.
This image is very similar to us. Faced with an uncontrollable external force, we stand against it to maintain our existence. We resist with just enough strength, unable to retreat or overpower it. We can only endure with the amount of strength we have. We can do nothing else but endure. If the balance is even slightly disrupted, our very existence becomes precarious. That's why we carry a sense of anxiety, constantly maintaining tension. It's a compulsive anxiety about our existence. It's an oppressive anxiety that stands over us. This anxiety never disappears because it is connected to our existential problem. This is the manifestation of the compulsive anxiety we carry.
Balloon paintings are an attempt to metaphorically express this anxiety of existence using balloons as a representation and painting as a language.
The expressed emotions have a purifying function in themselves. I hope to use the act of painting balloons to ventilate the anxiety inherent in existence and, thereby, to act as a ritual to maintain the identity of existence.
